How Do Car Brakes Work?

The inner workings of a car’s brakes are not too complicated to understand. Here’s how they work:

How Do Car Brakes Work?

  • A rotor is a metal disk that makes up much of a car’s wheel.
  • Pads are metal plates that hold friction material that comes in contact with the rotors. There is a pad on each side of a wheel.
  • When you press on the brake pedal, the hydraulic system uses the brake fluid to squeeze the pads against the rotors, causing the wheels to slow or stop.
